Early childhood education: development not daycare
Some of the most important learning occurs in our first few years. It occurs as the brain is developing the functional capacity for speech, coordination, emotions, and the many different skills that allow us to make sense of our world.
It’s challenging, it requires patience and it’s an incredibly important role. But there are many great reasons to choose early childhood as a career. Here are our top five:
1. An in-demand career
According to the Department of Employment, job openings in early childhood have risen strongly in the past five years, and employment to 2020 is expected to grow very strongly. Most of this is due to Generation Alpha – the nation’s second baby boom.
2. Milestone moments
The human brain actually grows the most during a child’s first three years. Young children need proper stimulation to begin developing important real-world skills like problem solving. As an early childhood educator, you can help them grow and reach these important milestones.
3. Creativity
Much of the learning process during the first five years takes place during hands-on activities. Using blocks, toys, sand and water you’ll be helping them learn shape, texture, colours, numbers and elements.
4. Push for educational changes
If you’re passionate about change, studying and working in early childhood education may be the right path for you. Make a direct change, whether it’s working in a non-profit preschool, or maybe even starting your own centre.
5. Become an important community member
There’s more to this career then playing with kids all day. You’ll also interact with their parents and various community members who can help connect you to important educational resources.
